San Fernando Valley

Nicknamed as the “Valley of the Stars”.

Welcome to San Fernando Valley

San Fernando Valley is one of the most exciting places to live in Los Angeles County. Nicknamed as the “Valley of the Stars”, the valley became the home of many of Hollywood’s most legendary names, including John Wayne, Carole Lombard, Ron Howard, and Marilyn Monroe, to list a few.

Famous residents aside, San Fernando Valley also shines when it comes to local arts, culture and cuisine. The whole San Fernando Valley lifestyle is topped off with pleasant Mediterranean climate all year round and gorgeous vistas of Transverse Ranges.

A large chunk of San Fernando Valley is part of the city of Los Angeles. The cities of Burbank, Hidden Hills, San Fernando, Calabasas, and Glendale are also located in The Valley.

History

Before San Fernando Valley became revered Valley of the Stars, the area was home to groups of Native Americans, mostly the Tongva, the Tataviam, and the Chumash. Their settlements were scattered all over The Valley.

In 1769, Spanish explorers arrived and began settling in the region. Rancho Encino (known today as Mission Hills) became the first Spanish land grant awarded. Soon, The Valley was taken over by the Spanish, with more land grants given and missions established in the area.

More modern developments followed in the 19th and 20th centuries, with H.J. Whitley as one of the most prominent names in San Fernando Valley history. The early 20th century in particular saw the rise of the film-making, aircraft, and automobile industries in the areas, shaping the San Fernando Valley we know today.
